Fundamental Concepts of Educational Leadership and Management

Description

In a time of high educational expectations and professional accountability, today's educational leaders must possess a broad variety of skills that enable them to function comfortably and effectively in changing environments and under highly politicized conditions. The mission of Fundamental Concepts of Educational Leadership is to foster understanding of this reality among those preparing for administrative and managerial careers in pre-colligate educational institutions and to help them develop the skills necessary for working effectively within those environments. This text emphasizes an action-research approach that is more eclectic and practical than ideological - compelling readers to think critically about the theoretical underpinnings of current educational practice and motivating them to solve problems using sensible, realistic alterative approaches. The revised third edition of this text includes a number of new tools -- such as activities, case studies, and instructional aids - which encourage active learning as well chapter review and reinforcement. The new edition also includes a table at the front of the text that links ISLLC standards with the corresponding discussion in within the book.

Few books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers Fundamental Concepts of Educational Leadership and Management pdf and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Martin s monumental epic cycle of high fantasy. Now, in "A Feast for Crows," Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace . . . only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction. Dear Friends, For Sarah Hawke, daughter of an impoverished miner, life offered little beyond the grime of Glasgow in the 1890s and the eternal drudgery of back-breaking work. Until a mysterious stranger entered her life. A stranger who turned out to be her real father - and the owner of a vast and prosperous shipping empire. Catapulted into a world of luxury, of servants and stately homes, Sarah begins a new and glittering life. As sole heiress to a fortune, she has much to gain - and everything to lose. For she takes over the business, and with it the risks and rivalry, deceit and intrigue - and the prospect of undying love...From Scotland to Paris, from Jamaica to South Africa, Sarah charms - and fights - her way to success against all odds. For she is dealing in a man's world, where the only way to succeed is to be a most determined woman.

Nautical Training Ships : An Illustrated History pdf

Phil Carradice: Nautical Training Ships : An Illustrated History

Nautical Training Ships : An Illustrated History

Description

For well over a hundred years all around the coast of Britain there were located a series of nautical training ships. Often surplus navy wooden walls, the ships provided a means of educating boys and young men, while preparing them for a lifetime at sea. The more famous of the schools included HMS Conway, initially on the Mersey, and then at Menai; the TS Mercury, at Hamble, Hampshire; the Mars on the Tay, at Dundee; the Vindicatrix at Sharpness Docks on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal; the Worcester on the Thames and the Arethusa at Greenhithe. The Arethusa, converted from a sailing vessel, lasted until 1974 before she was purchased and sailed to America to be restored as a typical sailing vessel of the late nineteenth century. Phil Carradice tells the story of the training ships that helped keep Britain a maritime nation from their foundation to their demise as Britain's once-proud merchant marine declined in the latter years of the twentieth century.

The hand of the young woman in question has been promised to the scion of noble family. She is to make her preparations for marriage at the family’s villa, where the inhabitants never seem to sleep. The atmosphere turns surreal as the days pass and her presence on the family estate begins to make itself felt on her future in-laws. This exciting prequel to VIZ Media's best-selling fantasy series, Fushigi Yugi, tells the story of the very first priestess of the Four Gods - the Priestess of Genbu! When schoolgirl Takiko Okuda attempts to destroy her father's translation of The Universe of the Four Gods, she is instead literally sucked into the story, becoming the Priestess of Genbu in an epic journey to find the seven Celestial Warriors! 'Twilight of the Idols', an attack on all the prevalent ideas of his time, offers a lightning tour of his whole philosophy. It also prepares the way for 'The Anti-Christ', a final assault on institutional Christianity. Compelling Conversations download PDF Both works show Nietzsche lashing out at self-deception, astounded at how often morality is based on vengefulness and resentment. Both reveal a profound understanding of human mean-spiritedness which still cannot destroy the underlying optimism of Nietzsche, the supreme affirmer among the great philosophers.

Scarcity: The True Cost of Not Having Enough

Description

Sendhil Mullainathan, the 'most interesting young economist in the world', and Eldar Shafir, the 'most brilliant psychologist' of his generation, explain the hidden problem behind everything with Scarcity Why can we never seem to keep on top of our workload, social diary or chores? Why does poverty persist around the world? Why do successful people do things at the last minute in a sudden rush of energy? Here, economist Sendhil Mullainathan and psychologist Eldar Shafir reveal that the hidden side behind all these problems is that they're all about scarcity. Using the new science of scarcity, they explain why obesity is rampant; why people find it difficult to sleep when most sleep deprived; and why the lonely find it so hard to make friends. Scarcity will change the way you think about both the little everyday tasks and the big issues of global urgency. 'Stars in their respective disciplines, and the combination is greater than the sum of its parts. Their project has a unique feel to it: it is the finest combination of heart and head that I have seen in our field' - Daniel Kahneman, author of Thinking, Fast and Slow 'Scarcity is a captivating book, overflowing with new ideas, fantastic stories, and simple suggestions that just might change the way you live' - Steven D. Levitt, coauthor of Freakonomics 'An ultimately humane and very welcome book' - Oliver Burkeman, Guardian Sendhil Mullainathan is a Professor of Economics at Harvard, and a recipient of a MacArthur Foundation "genius grant". He conducts research on development economics, behavioural economics, and corporate finance. He is Executive Director of Ideas 42, Institute of Quantitative Social Science, Harvard University. Eldar Shafir is William Stewart Tod Professor of Psychology and Public Affairs at Princeton University. Most of his work focuses on descriptive analyses of inference, judgment, and decision making, and on issues related to behavioural economics.

IT WAS THE PERFECT CRIME Unfortunately, it also led to the perfect punishment. When Jack Rankin gets busted for defacing a school desk with a huge wad of disgusting, watermelon bubble gum, the principal sentences him to three weeks of after-school gum cleanup for the chief custodian. The problem is, Jack's anger at the chief custodian was the reason for his gum project in the first place. The chief custodian happens to be Jack's dad. But doing time in the school basement after hours reveals some pretty surprising things: about the school, about Jack's father, and about Jack himself. For the Haymarket edition, Steel has added a new preface for North American readers and revised the book to address parallel themes in US history." Coverage includes: * An overview of the Every Child Matters Change for Children Programme and its impact on schools and teachers in learning communities * How to access personalised learning opportunities for a diversity of learners * New roles and responsibilities for teachers working with other paraprofessionals Scarcity: The True Cost of Not Having Enough ebook pdf from within schools and from external services * School self-evaluation, quality assurance and monitoring the five Every Child Matters outcomes aligned with the OFSTED inspection framework This accessible and user-friendly book provides a wealth of practical resources, including photocopiable sheets and positive solution-focused advice, to support busy teachers trying to keep pace with the amount of new legislation regarding the Change for Children Programme. It is also ideal for all those involved in supporting teachers in schools in responding to new ways of working - senior managers, advisers, inspectors, educational psychologists, ITE lecturers and health and social services professionals.

Warped Space: Art, Architecture and Anxiety in Modern Culture

Description

Beginning with agoraphobia and claustrophobia in the late nineteenth century, followed by shell shock and panic fear after World War I, phobias and anxiety came to be seen as the mental condition of modern life. They became incorporated into the media and arts, in particular the spatial arts of architecture, urbanism, and film. This "spatial warping" is now being reshaped by digitalization and virtual reality.Anthony Vidler is concerned with two forms of warped space. The first, a psychological space, is the repository of neuroses and phobias. This space is not empty but full of disturbing forms, including those of architecture and the city. The second kind of warping is produced when artists break the boundaries of genre to depict space in new ways. Vidler traces the emergence of a psychological idea of space from Pascal and Freud to the identification of agoraphobia and claustrophobia in the nineteenth century to twentieth-century theories of spatial alienation and estrangement in the writings of Georg Simmel, Siegfried Kracauer, and Walter Benjamin. Focusing on current conditions of displacement and placelessness, he examines ways in which contemporary artists and architects have produced new forms of spatial warping. The discussion ranges from theorists such as Jacques Lacan and Gilles Deleuze to artists such as Vito Acconci, Mike Kelley, Martha Rosler, and Rachel Whiteread. Finally, Vidler looks at the architectural experiments of Frank Gehry, Coop Himmelblau, Daniel Libeskind, Greg Lynn, Morphosis, and Eric Owen Moss in the light of new digital techniques that, while relying on traditional perspective, have radically transformed the composition, production, and experience--perhaps even the subject itself--of architecture.

A unique series of Pilates strength-building exercises using the Swiss exercise ball, resistance bands, and weights      The contest of wills between these two titanic characters unfolds against the turbulent backdrop of a faraway war and terrors conjured at home by Joseph McCarthy. And, as each recipe fits perfectly within the Slimming World diet plan, now dieters can simply turn to the section dealing with spring, summer, autumn or winter and find something healthy to cook that makes use of readily available ingredients at the peak of freshness. During the cold, dark days of autumn and winter, what could be better than warming borscht, souffled jacket potatoes, roasted soy duck breasts or spiced bean stew with feta? As the days get longer and warmer you can feast on lighter dishes, such as baked egg timbales, pan-cooked skate with bacon, broad bean and lemon risotto, asparagus with minted couscous or any of the delicious salads. Of course, dessert recipes haven't been forgotten.

--The Washington Post Book World "Gaslamp Fantasy," or historical fantasy set Art Therapy: Enchanted Forest free download pdf in a magical version of the nineteenth century, has long been popular with readers and writers alike. A number of wonderful fantasy novels, including "Stardust" by Neil Gaiman, "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell "by Susanna Clarke, and "The Prestige" by Christopher Priest, owe their inspiration to works by nineteenth-century writers ranging from Jane Austen, the Brontes, and George Meredith to Charles Dickens, Anthony Trollope, and William Morris. And, of course, the entire steampunk genre and subculture owes more than a little to literature inspired by this period."Queen Victoria's Book of Spells "is an anthology for everyone who loves these works of neo-Victorian fiction, and wishes to explore the wide variety of ways that modern fantasists are using nineteenth-century settings, characters, and themes. These approaches stretch from steampunk fiction to the Austen-and-Trollope inspired works that some critics call Fantasy of Manners, all of which fit under the larger umbrella of Gaslamp Fantasy. The result is eighteen stories by experts from the fantasy, horror, mainstream, and young adult fields, including both bestselling writers and exciting new talents such as Elizabeth Bear, James Blaylock, Jeffrey Ford, Ellen Kushner, Tanith Lee, Gregory Maguire, Delia Sherman, and Catherynne M. Valente, who present a bewitching vision of a nineteenth century invested (or cursed!) with magic.

The War that Ended Peace: How Europe abandoned peace for the First World War

Description

WINNER of the International Affairs Book of the Year at the Political Book Awards 2014 Longlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize 2013 The First World War followed a period of sustained peace in Europe during which people talked with confidence of prosperity, progress and hope. But in 1914, Europe walked into a catastrophic conflict which killed millions of its men, bled its economies dry, shook empires and societies to pieces, and fatally undermined Europe's dominance of the world. It was a war which could have been avoided up to the last moment - so why did it happen? Beginning in the early nineteenth century, and ending with the assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand, award-winning historian Margaret MacMillan uncovers the huge political and technological changes, national decisions and - just as important - the small moments of human muddle and weakness that led Europe from peace to disaster. This masterful exploration of how Europe chose its path towards war will change and enrich how we see this defining moment in our history.
